My Parents

I am not a parent and I know it’s always easier to give advice than live it but these are my thoughts on how far parents should try to influence their children’s choices.

I think parents have a responsibility to truly know their child like no one else does — the child’s strengths and weaknesses, temperament, and personality, likes and dislikes, and so on and guide the child towards activities that would develop the child’s strength and minimize her weaknesses. In the bible, God revealed to the parents of several great men the kind of child they would birth and what his purpose would be. God prophesied about Isaac’s birth to his parents, Abraham and Sarah. God prophesied about Samson’s birth to his parents, same for John the Baptist and Jesus. God told all these parents how to raise their children in a way that would please him and allow him to fulfill his purpose for their lives.

There’s a story about Jesus that always intrigues me every time I think about it. Before Jesus’ birth, an angel appeared to his mother Mary, and told her that she would conceive by the power of the holy spirit and birth a son who would be the savior of the world. The angel also appeared to her fiance, Joseph, and told him the same thing about Jesus. Fast forward to 12 years after Jesus is born, and he and his parents are returning from the Passover celebration at Jerusalem. Two days…
